Geological Parameters for Environmental Protection

UNESCO-ISESCO Sponsored Workshop
at the Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat (Oman),
in cooperation with the University of Exeter (UK),
10th - 15th May 2003

This UNESCO-ISESCO Sponsored Workshop  on Geological Parameters for Environmental Protection was based on a 'roving course' developed by UNESCO and the University of Exeter for engineers, scientists, managers and technical staff working in mining, water supply and natural resource development and management in developing countries of Africa and Asia. The course was developed by Mike Heath, John Merefield and Peter Grainger of the University of Exeter and has been supported since 1999 by UNESCO's Division of Earth Sciences under the supervision of Fernando L. Repetto and Danyela Piuzzi in Paris. To date, the course has been presented in Windhoek, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Dresden, Beijing, Mumbai and Muscat.

This second presentation of the course in Muscat, as an international workshop under the joint sponsorship of UNESCO and ISESCO, took place at the Department of Earth Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) between 10th and 15th May 2003 under the direction of Dr Tariq Cheema. Over 40 participants from nine countries in the Gulf Region took part in the workshop, which included a field visit to the Sunub landfill near Muscat.
